Types of legacy

There are two main ways you can leave a legacy when writing your will, as either a specific sum of money or a residuary legacy:

PECUNIARY LEGACY

If you would like to leave a specific amount to Pratham UK this is called a 'Pecuniary Legacy'.

A pecuniary legacy is a specific amount of money granted to a beneficiary in a will. It is a fixed sum that the testator (the person making the will) designates to be given to an individual, organisation, or charity, such as Pratham UK, upon their death.

This type of legacy is one of the most straightforward and common forms, ensuring that a precise amount is allocated to support the chosen beneficiary’s mission or cause. This kind of legacy is also not lessened by the rate of inflation. It is paid from the remainder of your estate after any other gifts, debts, taxes, and expenses have been made.

RESIDUARY LEGACY

If you would like to leave a percentage of your estate to Pratham UK this is called a 'Residuary Legacy'.

A residuary legacy is a request made in a will that addresses the remainder of your estate after all other specific gifts, debts, taxes, and expenses have been paid. This type of legacy ensures that the residue (what's left) of the estate goes to a specified beneficiary or beneficiaries.

For example, if you would like to leave a residuary legacy to Pratham UK, after all specific gifts and obligations are fulfilled, the remaining assets or percentage of the estate will be donated to support the charity’s mission. This form of legacy gift can however be affected by inflation.

How to leave a legacy gift

If you are about to write a new will then please ask your solicitor to insert ONE of the following paragraphs into your will, it is important that the charity number is included:

I give XX percent of the residue of my estate, both real and personal, to Pratham UK, 483 Green Lanes, London, N13 4BS, registered charity number 1099386 (England and Wales), for their general purposes. The receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

OR

I give to Pratham UK, 483 Green Lanes, UK, N13 4BS, Registered charity number 1099386 (England and Wales), the sum of £X,XXX for their general purposes and the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

How to add a gift to an existing will

If you have already written your will you can add a 'codicil', which is a legal document that allows you to updated any existing will without completely rewriting it. This might be done, for example, to increase a cash legacy, change an executor or guardian named in a will, or to add beneficiaries.

You can draft a codicil without a solicitor but it must be signed by the person who made the will and be witnessed in the same way. However, the witnesses do not have to be the same as for the original will.

There is no limit on how many codicils can be added to a will.

In memory giving

Many people see educating future generations as a wonderful legacy to leave. If you would like to create a tribute fund or collect donations in lieu of flowers at a funeral you can set up a dedicated page for your loved one on www.muchloved.com. A page also allows you to share pictures and videos as well as collect gifts. We would be honoured if you would select Pratham UK as their beneficiary charity and help educate children in India in memory of your loved one.
