From Learner to Mentor: How Sarita is helping girls in her community see a future full of possibilities beyond traditional expectations

Sarita Kumari’s story is one of resilience and determination, bringing a wave of change into her small village in Jharkhand. At 22, she made the bold decision to pursue education and a career, defying the traditional expectation that young women in her village are to focus solely on marriage and children.

Sarita’s journey with Pratham began in 2017 when her father learned about the General Duty Assistant (GDA) training programme. With her parents’ support she took the first step to enrol at a Pratham Skilling Centre in Ranchi, marking the beginning of her new path.

Through Pratham’s GDA programme, Sarita gained the skills she needed to secure a job at a health services agency in Delhi, providing much-needed financial support for her family. But she didn’t stop there—while working, she continued her education and earned a master’s degree in Hindi through an open university. Her achievements inspired many young women in her village to take part in Pratham’s skilling courses, eager to pursue their own dreams.

Now 29, Sarita works as a Mentor Leader at Pratham, guiding others in her village to break through societal barriers and chase their own aspirations. Her journey has not only transformed her own life but has ignited a wave of change, helping more girls and women in her community see a future full of possibilities beyond traditional expectations.

Sarita, said: “The women here do not step outside our village for work. I always wanted to be independent and be able to stand on my own without anyone’s help and through completing the GDA through Pratham I have managed to do exactly that! I hope that parents who don’t let their daughters go outside the village for work change their minds.”
