From village girl to automative expert: How Sarojini is challenging gender stereotypes and paving the way for future female engineers

Born into a family of six, her life was shaped by the realities of rural India. Her father’s illness placed a heavy burden on her family and Sarojini was forced to leave school at 14 years old to help with household chores and tend to the family’s small farm. However, this did not deter her thirst for knowledge and her yearning for a brighter future!

When the pandemic struck, Sarojini found an opportunity to pursue her passion for learning through Pratham’s online classes and discovered an interest in mechanics. With unwavering dedication, she absorbed every lesson, meticulously taking screenshots and transcribing them into her notebook.

Fuelled by her newfound knowledge and a desire to challenge gender stereotypes in engineering, she ventured into the male-dominated world of automotive repair. Despite initial skepticism and rejection due to being a woman, she remained determined and her willingness to learn eventually led her to being hired as an assistant at a local garage.
