How an aspiring Nursing Assistant bucked traditional expectations to pursue her dream career in healthcare
In the small village of Kanker, Chhattisgarh, lives a young woman named Jyoti. Under the pressure of tradition and societal expectations, Jyoti yearned for something more – a rewarding career helping others in healthcare.
Her dreams, though seemingly out of reach, ignited a spark within her, a desire to break free from the limitations set upon her and forge her own path.
It was during a stint as a volunteer with Pratham’s Hamara Gaon program, that Jyoti found her true calling – teaching young minds and nurturing their love for learning. With a strong sense of purpose, she embarked on a new chapter enrolling in Pratham’s Skilling program and moving to Raipur, a place that held both excitement and uncertainty.
Here, she immersed herself in the world of healthcare. In the practical classes, she learned quickly and honed her skills, from checking blood pressure to administering sugar tests. Each step brought her closer to her dream of becoming a healthcare professional. Despite the initial challenges and the disapproving voices of her neighbours, she remained strong.
She knew that learning held the key to unlocking her dreams and transforming her life.
With unwavering determination, Jyoti completed her nursing assistant course through hard work and perseverance and secured a job at a homecare agency, earning a monthly salary of Rs. 9000 (around £85). However, through her conscientiousness and dedication, Jyoti soon gained recognition and her salary was increased to Rs. 11000 (around £104) to reflect her considerable growth in the role.
Her story serves as a reminder that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams. With the right support and guidance, anything is possible.
