Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023: 'Beyond Basics'

We are thrilled to announce the release of the ASER (Rural) 2023 ‘Beyond Basics’ Report! This nationwide citizen-led household survey offers a valuable snapshot of the current state of children’s schooling and learning in rural India.

Six years ago, ASER initiated a quest to understand the lives of 14-18 year-old youth. In the years since ASER 2017, marked by notable events, including the pandemic, ASER 2023 ‘Beyond Basics’ once again explores the experiences of this age group. The survey, conducted in 28 districts across 26 states in India, focuses on the activity, awareness, aspiration and abilities of the youth.

The latest report sheds light on their activities, proficiency in reading and maths and a detailed examination of their access to digital devices as well as the corresponding skill levels. The report promises crucial insights into the educational landscape and the evolving needs of India’s young people.

The 2023 survey reached an incredible 34,745 young people with one rural district surveyed in each major state, except Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, where two rural districts were surveyed.

You can find out more about how digital technology is shaping the lives of young people by watching these amazing success stories featuring young people from West Bengal, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra as they share their aspirations for the future.
