Empowering Communities: Pratham's Menstrual Health Education Initiative

In a significant stride towards breaking taboos surrounding menstruation, Pratham’s Science and Maths Integrated Learning Enhancement (SMILE) team recently conducted sessions on Menstrual Health and Hygiene with over 2,000 mothers across Delhi. These sessions aim to provide scientifically accurate information, challenge long-held myths, and encourage open dialogue about menstruation.

The SMILE program engages children in primary and upper primary grades through experiential learning that builds foundational competencies and 21st-century skills. One of the ways it does this, is by placing mothers at the heart of its urban community model. By empowering mothers with knowledge, Pratham fosters an environment where they can confidently discuss menstrual health with their children, promoting a culture of openness and understanding.

Despite progress, stigma and misinformation around menstruation persist widely, often leading to harmful practices and silence around menstrual health. Practical training in hygiene and health management is essential to dispel myths and equip communities with the skills needed for safe and healthy menstrual practices.

Participants of the sessions reported a transformative experience, with many expressing newfound confidence in addressing menstrual health topics within their families. This initiative not only educates but uplifts communities by dismantling the stigma associated with menstruation.

Pratham’s commitment to menstrual health education exemplifies the power of informed communities in driving societal change. By continuing to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusive education, Pratham is paving the way for a future where menstrual health is openly discussed, understood, and embraced.
