Scaling Impact: How TaRL Is Transforming Learning Worldwide

Across the globe, millions of children are in school but not learning. They move through grades without acquiring basic reading or math skills –  a silent crisis with long-term consequences for individuals, economies, and societies.

Pratham International is addressing this challenge head-on through the global expansion of Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), a breakthrough solution with proven results.

Unlike traditional education systems that assume all children in a grade are at the same learning level, TaRL starts with the child, not the curriculum. Through simple assessments, children are grouped by learning level rather than age or grade. Tailored activities, often using locally developed stories, games, and math exercises help children build core skills step by step. The approach is interactive, engaging, and above all, effective.

TaRL was developed by Pratham Education Foundation and has been proven to work through rigorous evaluations by J-PAL and other research partners. Now, through Pratham International, this approach is going global with partnerships across more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
From classrooms in Kenya to community programs in Brazil, across sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, governments and NGOs are adapting TaRL to meet the needs of their local contexts. Pratham International provides technical support, training, and tools  but critically, the implementation is led by local actors, ensuring sustainability and cultural relevance.

What makes TaRL stand out is its simplicity, adaptability, and impact. Children who once struggled to read even a few words are now reading full stories and solving arithmetic problems. The goal isn’t just to improve scores, it’s to give every child a fair chance at learning.

Your support helps us build these learning systems and distribute them at scale, reaching children who need it the most. Donate today  to support our mission of every child in school and learning well.
