Transforming Education Through 'Teaching At The Right Level': Dr Rukmini Banerji discusses insights of Pratham's foundational literacy and numeracy goals on Sansad TV
Pratham CEO, Dr Rukmini Banerji, recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sansad TV, the official parliamentary channel of India, broadcasting the proceedings of the two Houses of Indian Parliament. The channel aims to inform citizens about the workings of the Indian government, the legislative process, and key national issues which made it a fantastic platform for Dr Banerji to discuss the impact of Pratham’s, “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) methodology that is transforming primary learning in India.
In the interview, Dr Banerji highlights how Pratham’s innovative TaRL approach focuses on teaching children based on their current learning level rather than their age or grade, which has accelerated progress in literacy and numeracy within primary education. The conversation also touched on the goals of the 2020, ‘National Education Policy’ which proposes the creation of a new educational system in India that aligns with the United Nations’ aspirational SDG4 goals while building upon India’s traditions and value systems. Objectives include, ensuring access to quality education at every stage of life, increasing the number of people with skills for employment and entrepreneurship and eliminating gender and income disparities.
Alongside Shaveta Sharma Kukreja, CEO and MD of Central Square Foundation, Dr Banerji emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts with the government and civil society to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy for young children and how TaRL has successfully been scaled across multiple regions with the help of key, collaborative partnerships.
